The annual WDAN Sports Media Camp for Kids held at Danville Area Community College has been cancelled for 2020. The program for students age 10 to 18, was scheduled the week of June 15th, will not be held because of the current public health crisis.
“The amount of time to prepare and the number of volunteers that it takes to execute the week-long camp makes it impossible as we try to predict what we will be facing in June”, says camp co-founder Mike Hulvey. “Annually we have between 15 and 20 students, along with over 30 adult volunteers, speakers and supporters. It’s a large crew who are dedicated to helping the next generation of reporters, broadcasters, writers and sports media professionals”, added Hulvey.
This was to have been the 25th annual version of the program. Annually the camp provides students immersive learning opportunities with writing, video production, public speaking, public address and their favorite, play-by-play of Danville Dans baseball. The camp offers a series of speakers who share knowledge with the students. Last year they included a former NFL player, the retired Chief Operating Officer from CBS Radio, plus a Vermilion County native who has led the audio production team for the Olympics, Super Bowl and NBA Finals.
The WDAN Sports Media Camp for Kids is coordinated by Eric Westfall, Scott Eisenhauer, RJ Crace, Greg Doland, Chad Dare and Mike Hulvey. The athletic department at DACC supports the program including Athletic Director Tim Bunton and Coach DaJuanGouard.
