DANVILLE — A defense attorney is speaking out about the murder trial earlier this month in which a Danville man was acquitted on all counts stemming from a May 2023 fatal shooting.
A Vermilion County jury acquitted Brandon A. Buford, 33, of all three counts of first-degree murder in the death of Christopher J. Smalls, 33, of Danville.
Buford testified he fired in self-defense after Smalls punched him in the back of the head but struck Smalls by accident, attorney Alfred Ivy said.
“I do not know how the jury reached its verdict, but I know the Buford family is grateful they were heard. I hope the jury heard the numerous witnesses who testified and shared the concerns expressed. Why did Christopher Smalls attack his cousin Brandon Buford? And why did he refuse to stop despite many opportunities and interventions?” Ivy said.
