The remote learning plans for some local students got a boost today as ‘Radio Teaching Time’ began on WDNL Radio. Kayla Dossett, a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Southwest Elementary School, led the first class….
{‘’I was thinking that since we can’t be in school right now, I would bring school to you – through the radio! I have lots of great things planned for us today,’’ said Dossett, ‘’so let’s get started. I know you can’t see me but that doesn’t mean we can’t do parts of our group time together. First, we’ll talk about what day and month it is, and then we’ll talk about the weather, and then I’m going to need your help to pattern. And finally, I have a book to read to help us with our feelings. – Got all that? Great – lets go.’’}
The broadcast was the kick-off of ‘The Louise Neuhoff Educational Access Project’, designed to help educate students during the continuing nationwide coronavirus pandemic. Each weekday morning, WDNL/D-102 Radio will be providing up to 30 minutes for teachers to present their lessons and communicate directly with students. Of course anyone can listen, not just the students in that particular teacher’s class.
During part of today’s lesson, Dossett talked with her pre-k students about the calendar….
{‘’What month is it? Hmmm, it’s April. Let’s clap out the syllables – are you ready? ‘Ap – ril’ (clap, clap). You do it – ‘Ap – ril’ (clap-clap). How many sounds does it have? Ap-ril (clap-clap). Two sounds. But what day of April is it? Hmmm, let’s think. Today’s the thirteenth of April. Can you help me count to thirteen? Let’s do thirteen jumping-jacks together to try and count that high,’’ said Dossett.}
The lessons continue tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. on WDNL (102.1fm) Radio, and will then be available via podcast at VermilionCountyFirst.com/radio-teacher-time/.
