THE FOLLOWING IS A DANVILLE NOON ROTARY RELEASE
ABOVE: Nancy O’Kane and Rotary President Terri Cummings
Danville Noon Rotary heard from Nancy O’Kane, Director of The Dwelling Place Day Center in Danville. A registered nonprofit organization, The Dwelling Place was established to meet needs of those in the community experiencing homelessness, in transition, or living in poverty and struggling to meet the necessities of daily living.
Open on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm, they offer meals, shower and laundry facilities, a day room with the amenities of home, access to computers and wi-fi, hygiene products and connections to resources and programs. In April of 2017, The Dwelling Place began with five determined women, three years of planning and a strong belief that every individual, regardless of their social-economic assignment, should be treated with dignity and respect.
Nancy spoke of the early days when they distributed hygiene products from the trunk of their cars. Now they are located within the First Presbyterian Church and serve from 50-80 individuals per week. They also oversee three shelters in Danville that serve as temporary transitional housing for families of up to six members. They are grateful for their partnership with Vermilion Housing, Crosspoint and other social service agencies and are always looking for volunteers to help serve meals, organize laundry services and more.
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer for The Dwelling Place, please call 217-213-5308 or email thedwellingplacevc@gmail.com.
It is an exciting time to be part of the Danville Noon Rotary which meets the first Monday of every month at 12 pm at Worksource Enterprises. All are welcome and encouraged to join.
