DANVILLE — A few weeks after a youth-led town hall to stop gun violence, the group approached the Danville City Council on Tuesday night about next steps.
One of its representatives, Chase Clark, passed out to aldermen the gun-violence prevention plans that Champaign and Baltimore have put in place.
Clark said those cities have seen a reduction in gun-violence incidents and homicides.
Danville has seen fewer gun homicides but still has a high number of shootings, with more than 300, he said.
He said some of the best practices of the plans Danville could implement include focused deterrence and group-violence interventions; identifying highest-risk people and groups and creating custom notifications about consequences; community violence interventions; increasing hospital-based violence interventions, like the program at Crosspoint Human Services; and increasing funding to youth divergent and re-engagement programs like Project Success.
