THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JENNIFER BAILEY

DANVILLE — All the years Patrick Carley worked and played alongside fellow Danville police Officer Mike Stephens, he never imagined he’d be organizing an event honoring his friend.
Mr. Stephens passed away in December at age 50 after a blood clot in his legs spread to his lungs. He had retired from the police department in May 2024 after 20 years. In addition to serving as a field training officer in the patrol division, Mr. Stephens also served as president of the local Police Benevolent and Protective Association.
”We always played in the police versus fire department games,” Carley said.
The charity softball showdown between the Danville departments — long a summertime staple but not held last year — will return to Danville Stadium on Saturday, for a special cause.
