Illinois reported 1,346 new COVID-19 cases in Wednesday’s update with 80 additional deaths. The state has confirmed 24,593 cases including 948 deaths. Union County became the 89th county to report a case.
Governor JB Pritzker said general state revenue is projected to fall $2.7 billion in fiscal 2020 with another drop of $4.6 billion in fiscal 2021 due to the effects of COVID-19. Pritzker said the shortfall grows to $7.4 billion if a constitutional amendment for a graduated income tax fails. Pritzker said agencies have already been directed to limit purchases, travel and hiring. The governor also said $400 million in investment borrowing has been retooled, and next month up to $1.2 billion in short-term borrowing will help bridge the shortfalls. Pritzker emphasized the state will not go without a budget.
