DANVILLE — Danville Public Library officials learned Monday after a meeting with Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. that a proposed reduction to the library’s budget is now about half of what it could have been.
A first draft of the city’s new tax levy shows that the budget cuts for the library amount to about $214,000, instead of the about $400,000 to $500,000 that Williams had suggested a few months ago. The city council isn’t expected to act on the final property-tax levy until December.
Danville Library Board president Mark Denman said the board wanted to avoid any funding cuts but agreed that library could manage the $200,000 reduction, which amounts to about 10 percent of its budget, and still maintain services.
