The Danville Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 20 Iowa Street on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at approximately 12:19 p.m. Units responded following reports of a house on fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions coming from a vacant residence. Crews immediately initiated fire suppression operations and conducted a
primary search of the structure, which confirmed the building was unoccupied.
A total of 19 firefighters worked through the evening in extremely cold and icy conditions. Due to the incident’s duration and severity, off-duty firefighters were called back to provide extra personnel. To ensure firefighter safety and recovery, a city bus was dispatched to the scene and used as a warming center.
Assistant Chief Jerry Sparks stated, “The extreme weather conditions presented numerous unique challenges. But, despite multiple falls due to icy conditions, there were no injuries reported.”
Assistant Chief Sparks also noted that fire personnel had a close call when a partial roof collapse occurred while firefighters were evacuating the residence. Fire investigators have determined the fire was incendiary, and the investigation remains ongoing. The Danville Fire Department is working closely with appropriate agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of this morning, fire crews remain on scene, continuing to extinguish hot spots. The Danville Fire Department reminds the public to exercise caution during periods of severe winter weather and to report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
