THE FOLLOWING IS AN ILLINOIS HOUSE REPUBLICAN CAUCUS RELEASE
A great number of pieces of legislation officially became law on the 1st of January, one in particular dealing with the Mahomet Aquifer.
State Representative Brandun Schweizer (R-Danville), a co-sponsor on the legislation, says Senate Bill 1723 bans carbon sequestration in any sequestration facility that overlies, underlies, or passes through a sole-source aquifer, like the Mahomet Aquifer, and creates the Mahomet Aquifer Study Commission, to study and review the safety of carbon capture and storage under the Mahomet Aquifer.
This new law provides vital protection against pollution from carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, building on earlier efforts to safeguard the aquifer.
