DANVILLE — Danville School District 118 saw a big jump in student discipline incidents last year, increasing from 1,574 in 2024 to 2,817 in 2025.
According to the discipline improvement plan the school board approved Wednesday night, “This increase was observed across all student demographic groups; however, the district acknowledges that disciplinary practices can have disproportionate impacts on historically marginalized students.”
Associate Superintendent Markesha Parker said the Illinois State Board of Education has identified the school district as being in the top 20 percent for one or more exclusionary discipline metrics for the past three consecutive years.
With that, the district had to create a district discipline improvement plan.
“This plan was developed collaboratively with building principals, assistant principals, directors, assistant directors…,” Parker said.
“We think that our plan outlines a more proactive approach and we want to focus more on staff training and additional supports for students,” she said.
She said they’re confident their efforts will improve student discipline and they should see a decrease in years to come.
