A new five-year lease for Danville Stadium was approved during the Tuesday evening (March 3rd ) Danville City Council meeting. And two specific future possibilities came up. After the meeting, CIMG was able to talk with the Danville Dans’ and Danville Stadium Inc president Rick Kurth; who said the new lease had been in the works for five months. It was mentioned during the meeting that by the third year of the contract, plans are to be in place for putting field turf on the playing surface. Kurth says, they will be looking at various avenues.
AUDIO: There are a lot of foundations we can go to. We have a 501C3 also; corporation. So we’re going to be pursuing grants.
But even bigger news was what else came up during our talk with both Rick and Dianne Kurth. We all remember the movie “A League of Their Own.” Well, a possible new women’s baseball league could very well be putting a team in Danville Stadium.
AUDIO: (Rick) And it’ll be a league, hopefully; between Springfield, Decatur, Quincy, and Danville; which would be just fantastic. It’d be ladies playing baseball. (Dianne) And this is only in the very early stages. But there’s word that we’re trying.
Rick and Dianne stated that this will not happen in 2026, but 2027 is a possibility. Dianne also mentioned they’d like to bring some additional events to Danville Stadium, such as concerts.
