DANVILLE — A Danville man was sentenced to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Monday after a jury had found the 32-year-old guilty of murder in the 2022 beating death of a 2-year-old.
The court sentence for Dantrail Johnson also included three years of mandatory supervised release. The sentence is to be served at 100 percent and he’s given credit for 1,260 days served.
Johnson, before Judge Mark Goodwin, was advised of his appeal rights.
Prior to the sentencing, the defendant’s motion for a new trial was denied.
After hearing arguments, the jury in January deliberated for a little more than three hours before finding Johnson guilty of first-degree murder.
In opening statements, Vermilion County Assistant State’s Attorney Tom O’Connor said 2-year-old Cali Sago experienced a “brief life and horribly violent death.”
“It was a life too early taken (and) taken at the hands of this man, Dantrail Johnson,” O’Connor told the jury.
