ABOVE: The Fri March 27th STEPUP Vermilion County meeting at Second Church of Christ began with a performance by the Danville High School Gospel Choir, under the direction of Ricky Hoskins.
Friday morning’s (Mar 27th) STEPUP Vermilion County meeting at Danville’s Second Church of Christ included a couple of interesting items from United Way of Danville Area CEO Angie Lazzell. She’s hoping to receive a $4,000 grant to be able to participate in the TEENS TEACH TECH program. Trained high school students would go to places like nursing homes, or CRIS Healthy Aging to show seniors how to be more comfortable using modern technology.
Participating students would need to teach under a mentor, so right now Lazzell is thinking about student resources available through Project Success of Vermilion County. Lazzell says she’d like to have two different groups doing this, with the first one concentrating on one particular area.
AUDIO: They have students in Hoopeston, so we’d really like to do the north end of the county. And if we had any kids that were Spanish speaking, that would be great as well.

United Way of Danville Area CEO Angie Lazzell addresses listeners at the March 27th STEPUP meeting at Second Church of Christ.
Lazzell says a second group could focus on the Danville area, or the Danville area plus the southern region of the county. Lazzell also says one thing TEENS TEACH TECH emphasizes teaching the kids about is helping seniors with the modern world of grocery shopping.
AUDIO: When I heard that they were teaching the kids how to do the coupons, and things from Meijer; because all that’s changed now. Nobody has the little cards anymore. You can shop online with your rewards card and clip in the coupons. I know that’s difficult.
Meanwhile, United Way of Danville Area is seeking some help with delivering bags of food to those in need. Lazzell says they get their bags of food from St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Family Catholic Church, and DoorDash handles a lot of deliveries. But DoorDash cannot do it all; and Lazzell says they have a waiting list from a wide variety of place.
AUDIO: So we’ve had deliveries, you know, to like the American Inn; where some folks might not have a permanent address. (But) DoorDash has to go at a ten mile radius from the pantry where they pick up. So again, whether we try to work with Danville Township, or somebody in one of the rural communities like Oakwood, they would be focusing on those individuals.
