Champaign Police are asking for help from the public as they attempt to solve a shooting that occurred outside the Market Place Mall Saturday night (January 25, 2020). Police have received no reports of anyone being hurt, however several vehicles parked on the mall’s parking lot sustained damage. There was a large police presence at the mall following the shooting. Some of the officers placed crime scene tape, roping off a large area of the parking lot where the damaged vehicles were located.
Police late Saturday were processing the crime scene and immediate area. They were also interviewing witnesses but added no arrests had been made.
As the shooting took place outside the mall, some customers inside scrambled to safety.
As a precautionary measure, officers conducted a search of several stores in the mall to ensure no injuries had occurred, said Deputy Chief of Police David Shaffer.
Champaign Police ask that anyone with information about this incident contact the police. Furthermore, any business in the nearby area around Market Place Mall with exterior surveillance camera systems is asked to contact the police department. It is believed video footage may aid in the investigation.
