DANVILLE — The Danville City Council began discussions Tuesday about “fixing the problem” with the position of elected city treasurer, which officials said has resulted in unqualified people in the role and issues that have been costly for the city.
“What we have experienced is an ongoing problem of having (the position) as an elected position,” Ward 7 Alderman Doug Ahrens said.
City officials are exploring the possibility of placing a referendum to change the position from elected to appointed.
Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said city attorney Leon Parker is investigating how the position can be changed to appointed, if the council desires, and how it falls under the city’s voting-rights consent decree when the form of government changed.
