DANVILLE — Danville Iron junior hockey team owner and head coach Bo Cheesman said they chose to come to Danville and intentionally selected Friday’s date for an official team community introduction because it was Danville’s anniversary.
Danville was founded on April 10, 1827.
Hockey fans and supporters, Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr., state Rep. Brandun Schweizer and others were on hand for the press conference at the David S. Palmer Arena.
Williams said the city has had hockey teams on and off for decades, but unfortunately for the last five to seven years, “we’ve had some turmoil in this area. We’ve had teams come and we’ve had teams go. We’ve had owners who treated their teams terribly and we’ve had owners that were great. We’ve had successes and we’ve had failures.”
He remembers having the Danville Wings junior hockey team in the same vein as the Iron. He said he and the community is “thrilled” and “excited” to have the team come to Danville
“Mr. Cheesman has a good reputation,” Williams said. “Their success is our success. We want to integrate the players into this community.”
