The Vermilion County Animal Shelter will soon see some major improvements. The County Board voted last evening (Tuesday) to accept a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Julius Hegeler II Foundation for improving the operations at the shelter. County Board Chairman Steve Miller says the gift is very much appreciated…
{AUDIO: “It’s a magnificent gift to the county. And we so appreciate the confidence they have in us that we’re going to make the kind of improvements that the public will be proud of – and that will serve our community for a long time.”}
The money from the Julius Hegeler II Foundation will be paid in installments over three years.

(Some county board members listen to the discussion Tuesday evening.)
Also, during their meeting, county board members approved $3.1 million dollars in improvements at the Joseph G. Cannon Building and Rita B. Garman Vermilion County Courthouse. Replacement of the cooling tower at the Cannon Building is part of the improvements, along with major improvements to the building’s elevator.
Mark Steinbaugh, chairman of the County Board’s Property Committee, says work on the elevator will likely not begin until late this fall or early winter…
{AUDIO: “I would say the elevator project will not be completed until in 2027. But we’ll do our best to work around what we can do there. We can set-up temporary offices, etcetera. And that will be taken care of.”}
Some tuckpointing and roof improvements are also among work to be done at the buildings.
