Illinois’ daily COVID-19 update on Monday reported 2,341 new cases for a total of 63,840, and an additional 46 deaths for a total of 2,662. The 46 deaths is the lowest single-day total since April 19. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 13,834 tests processed over the previous 24 hours. IDPH reports the three hospitals in the Springfield region are utilizing 46 percent of intensive care unit beds and 22 percent of ventilators.
Governor JB Pritzker said the deconstruction of the overflow patient facility at McCormick Place in Chicago is a sign that safeguards put in place early in the pandemic are working. About 500 beds were available there with the ability to expand to 3,000 beds. Pritzker said he believed 20 to 30 beds were in use at a given time. The governor said McCormick Place was utilized when early projections of the number of COVID-19 cases showed the possibility of higher need.
