THE FOLLOWING IS A HORIZON HEALTH RELEASE

(Paris, IL)—To help meet the growing demand for urology services, Horizon Health has expanded its urology team with the addition of Physician Assistant Doug Stevens.
Stevens joins Dr. Michael Shanks, board-certified urologist, and Certified Urology Nurse Practitioner Melissa Thomas, further strengthening Horizon Health’s commitment to providing high-quality urologic care. Together, the team brings more than 70 years of combined medical experience.
Stevens has many years of experience in general urology care, including, but not limited to, men’s hormone replacement therapy, bladder cancer treatment, urologic procedures such as prostate needle biopsies and cystoscopies, and serving as a surgical first assistant for a wide range of urologic surgeries. His surgical experience includes stone disease procedures, nephrectomies, radical prostatectomies, and procedures performed using the da Vinci robotic surgical system.
Beyond urology, Stevens has extensive experience in orthopedic spine surgery, urgent care and occupational medicine, and as an as-needed provider in the emergency department. He served four years as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, providing medical care to military personnel and their family members. He currently serves as associate professor and program director of the Indiana State University Physician Assistant Program.
Stevens earned a Master of Medical Science degree from the physician assistant program at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in life sciences from Indiana State University.

In 2024, Horizon Health urology services received the Axonics Center of Excellence award for exceptional care of patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction. Only two percent of physicians using Axonics implantable device technology receive the award.
