HOOPESTON — A new mural and the return of the truck and tractor pull are a couple highlights of the 82nd National Sweetcorn Festival.
The annual festival held during Labor Day weekend makes the community proud, said 18-year volunteer Brad Hardcastle, a Hoopeston native.
Activities start Thursday night and run through Labor Day.
“All proceeds go to our Christmas-gift programs,” Hardcastle said about the Hoopeston Jaycees, which sponsors the event that brings thousands of attendees to McFerren Park.
The National Sweetcorn Festival mural was unveiled Tuesday night at the park. The Jaycees are finishing fundraising for the mural completed by local artist Lindsey Franz.
Lauren Linares, who along with Hardcastle is on the board of the Jaycees chapter, chaired the mural project. Linares saw Franz’s artistic work elsewhere and thought it would make a great addition in Hoopeston.
