Metallica frontman James Hetfield can be seen discussing his love for cars and his automobile collection in a new video posted by the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Hetfield donated his collection to the Los Angeles-based museum for an exhibit that opened in late January, called “Reclaimed Rust.” Hetfield built his collection on his own using reclaimed parts and abandoned cars, rather than buying pre-existing vehicles.
He explains in the short film, “'Reclaimed Rust' to me means that you take an old guitar and it’s sitting there with songs still in it, waiting for someone to pick it up and bring life into it. That’s what I love and I’ve done that with many of these cars. I have seen cars sitting in a field in Kansas and thinking they’ve got a story to tell, still, so let’s bring this back to life.”
Hetfield made his first major public appearance since entering rehab last fall on January 30th, when the “Reclaimed Rust” exhibit opened with a ticketed reception at the Petersen Museum. Hetfield took part in a chat and helped auction two of his ESP guitars at the event.
