THE FOLLOWING IS AN ILLINOIS RED CROSS RELEASE
Volunteers Have Responded to 44 Home Fires Across the Region in October
October 12, 2026 — From severe storms and flooding to home fires that leave families with little more than the clothes on their backs, disasters and emergencies continue to impact communities across Illinois.
As requests for assistance grow, the American Red Cross is calling on more volunteers to help bring comfort and hope when the unexpected happens.
So far in October, Red Cross volunteers responded to 44 home fires across the Illinois Region, providing emergency assistance to 158 people. As emergencies increase across the region, the need for trained, compassionate volunteers has never been greater.
If you or someone you know needs assistance after a home fire or local disaster, please call 1-800-RED CROSS.
A Growing Need: Volunteers Needed
Behind every response is a family facing uncertainty, a neighbor who has lost a home or a community beginning the long road to recovery. Red Cross volunteers offer immediate assistance, emotional support and resources to help people take their first steps forward. Whether responding to a home fire or supporting a community after a major storm, their presence reminds families that they are not alone. As colder weather approaches, the Red Cross is also reminding residents that home fires remain among the most frequent disasters to which its volunteers respond. Simple preparedness steps can help protect lives.
The Red Cross is proud that its volunteers reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. People of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels are welcome. Currently, the most-needed roles include:
- Disaster Action Team (DAT): Help families in your community after a home fire or other disaster. DAT team members provide emotional support, emergency financial assistance and information to help families begin to recover.
-
Shelter Volunteers: Ensure needs of shelter residents are met and help them access additional services.
