Illinois 104th District State Rep Brandun Schweizer has presented his first of what is planned to be monthly “Community Spotlight Awards” from his office at 3821 North Vermilion.
Schweizer is asking for monthly nominations on his RepSchweizer.com website, and says that for the initial award Darrin Hightower was the runaway winner.
Known for his DK2, or DarrinsKids2 non-profit organization; Hightower’s major event for the last six years has been putting together free back-to-school haircuts at the Danville Boys & Girls Club. Schweizer says, that event took even more steps forward going into this school year.
AUDIO: Not only individuals in Vermilion County, but he also expanded it into Rantoul. And I think, combined, probably had just under 500 individuals that came in there and got haircuts; as well as to be able to have different organizations come in and pass out school supplies and other information within the community itself.
Hightower says the annual free haircuts event makes a definite statement each year.
AUDIO: It shows every year we really never can tap the surface of how many people we can help, right? Every year you see a new need. Every year something grows; we see a new initiative come about. And it just keeps growing, so we’re just going to let it grow, serve as many people as we can, and expand as much as we possibly can.
And speaking of “new initiatives,” Darrin’s DK2 team will be contributing to a special diaper giveaway event soon, called “Diapers with Dignity.”
AUDIO: We partner with Carle by the Riverfront, and we’ll have an exam room where we’ll hand out free diapers, formula, and all baby products. So, on October 23rd it will go live.
That’s Friday, October 23rd at Carle by the Riverfront. Once again, if you’d like to nominate someone to be Representative Schweizer’s next “Community Spotlight Award” honoree, just go to RepSchweizer.com.
