Department Sets Goal of Installing 72 Free Smoke Alarms During October 18–24 Campaign
DANVILLE, IL – The Danville Fire Department is proud to announce its participation in the third annual Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Statewide Blitz, taking place October 18–24, 2026. The initiative brings together hundreds of fire departments across Illinois in partnership with Camp I Am Me and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal to promote fire safety and ensure residents have properly installed, working smoke alarms in their homes.
Held during National Fire Prevention Month, the statewide campaign focuses on educating residents about the dangers of home fires and the lifesaving importance of working smoke alarms.
As part of this year’s initiative, the Danville Fire Department has established a goal of installing 72 new smoke alarms in homes throughout the City of Danville.
“Working smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your family from a home fire,” said Fire Inspector Tim McFadden of the Danville Fire Department. “Our goal is to install 72 new smoke alarms during this statewide initiative, but more importantly, we want to make sure every resident has the early warning they need to escape safely in the event of a fire. We encourage Danville residents to take advantage of this free program.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by approximately 60 percent.
Free Smoke Alarm Installations Available to Danville Residents
City of Danville residents can request free smoke alarm installations through the Danville Fire Department’s Community Connect program. Firefighters will assist eligible residents with installing smoke alarms in appropriate locations throughout their homes.
Residents can request an installation by:
– Visiting the Danville Fire Department website at https://www.cityofdanville.org/243/Fire and accessing Community Connect.
– Calling the Captain on Duty at 217-431-2354.
The Danville Fire Department encourages residents to check their smoke alarms, replace alarms that are 10 years old or older, and ensure alarms are installed inside every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
“Fire prevention starts long before an emergency occurs,” McFadden added. “By working together with our community, we can make Danville safer, one smoke alarm at a time.”
The Danville Fire Department is proud to join fire departments across Illinois in this important statewide effort and encourages residents to help spread the word to neighbors, family members, and friends who may benefit from this free service.
Help us reach our goal of 72 new smoke alarms installed—and help make Danville a safer community!
