A ‘Swag Bag Parade’, virtual graduation, and a ‘Viking Prize Patrol’ are just some of the ways graduates in the Danville High School Class of 2020 will be honored this year. The graduates missed out on a lot this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic – including participating in sports, clubs and Prom.
Danville High School Principal Tracy Cherry says a Virtual Graduation will be taped on May 26th through 28th. Students will go to the high school 10 at a time in 40 minute intervals in their cap and gowns. They will walk across the stage in the Dick Van Dyke Auditorium to be presented their diploma. The graduates will be the only people allowed in the building. A video of the graduation ceremony will be show on the District 118 website and Facebook page starting June 13, 2020.
Yard signs congratulating the seniors were delivered to their homes by staff members earlier this week.
The ‘Viking Prize Patrol’ will involve staff and administration who will deliver scholarship recipients their award (along with balloons) at the homes of students on May 21st and 22nd.
A ‘Swag Bag Parade’ on May 24th from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. will involve graduating seniors driving past the west side of Danville High School along Jackson Street where administrators will hand students their ‘Swag Bag’. Staff will be spread out along the sidewalk for social distancing – such as with recent food distributions. The ‘Swag Bags’ will contain a T-shirt, DHS blanket, DHS cup, Yearbook, and DHS newspaper.
A Senior Social Event – picnic or other event is planned later where seniors can get their yearbooks signed.
And other future events are planned to honor the Danville High School Class of 2020 including being invited to celebrate during the next DHS Homecoming game, and an invitation to participate for free at the 2021 Prom.
