Students returning to District 118 schools in the fall will likely encounter a much different learning environment than what they experienced in the pre-pandemic world.
Superintendent Alicia Geddis says guidelines from the state say Danville schools can only reopen if the area is in Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan and with approval from the Vermilion County Public Health Department.
Geddis says school instruction could go on in three ways: in-person attendance, online learning, or a combination of the two. She said districts will be required to continue social distancing and purchase large quantities of hand sanitizer.
School board member Lon Henderson says he is concerned how larger schools such as Danville High School will be able to function due to gathering restrictions…
{”So how do we only have 50 students at a time at Danville High School? And that’s just one of our schools. So, to me, that’s problematic,” said Henderson.}
Board vice president Dr. Randy Ashton says the district simply does not know what will go on until it receives more information…
{”The situation is changing weekly, if not monthly. I mean the environment has significantly changed in the last 30 days, and it will significantly change in the next 30 days,” said Ashton.}
Geddis said she is currently waiting to see if the state releases any new information. She said more guidelines will be released next month.
