Illinois Department of Transportation will begin replacement of the Route 150 bridge over Interstate 57 in Champaign on Wednesday.
The project is the first step in the eventual reconstruction of the I-57 and I-74 interchange, one of the state’s busiest interchanges in the state.
Starting Wednesday, Route 150 will be reduced to one lane over the interstate while the new bridge is constructed. Overnight lane closures on I-57 will also occur occasionally.
IDOT says the overpass was built in 1964 and has exceeded its expected life cycle. Similar projects in August will involve the replacement of the Mattis Avenue bridges over both interstates.
All of the new bridges will accommodate more ramps for the new interchange, which is due to be constructed beginning next summer.
