The City of Danville is considering purchasing the former First Farmers Bank branch at Fairchild and Vermilion streets and plans to use Brownfield EPA money to clean up the site.
The bank closed earlier this year after a vehicle ran into the side of it, and is not reopening.
Grants and Planning Manager Logan Cronk says the bank branch is next to a former dry cleaner that the city already owns.
“And it is a contaminated site, and due to the closeness of that site it’s almost a shoo-in that the First Farmers Bank site is also contaminated as well,” he said.
Cronk says the dry cleaner site is contaminated with solvents that the former managers would dump out the back of the building. He said Brownfield funds are only used for site assessments, but the EPA could grant a cleanup grant.
