Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says he encourages Danville residents to wear face masks, but will not be forcing city residents to wear them.
Williams told aldermen during Tuesday night’s virtual city council meeting that he said several weeks ago that he would not wear a mask, but he now says he will wear a mask while inside public spaces.
“I will not be wearing a mask outside, ever,” he explained. “That’s just not going to happen. If we’re outdoors, I’m not wearing a mask, nor would I expect others to. I think that’s counter-intuitive. However, indoors I do wear a mask, and I think if people can medically do so they should do so, but I’m not going to be forced into making any kind of a statement one way or another.”
Williams said he has chosen to wear a mask when he is indoors unless he is eating. He said he believes his decision shows that he cares for the citizens of Danville.
