The Illinois Department of Transportation is set to begin replacing the two overpass bridges that carry Mattis Avenue over Interstates 57 and 74 in Champaign.
The project, along with the replacement of the U.S. Route 150 bridge over I-57, represents the first phase of construction in the eventual replacement and reconstruction of the I-57 and 74 interchange.
Starting August 3rd, Mattis Avenue will be reduced to one lane over I-57 and controlled by traffic signals. The I-74 overpass along Mattis will be reduced to one lane in either direction.
Both bridges will be rebuilt and expanded to accommodate new turn lanes from the interstates below. The main interchange handles approximately 40,000 vehicles a day.
