The State Commander of the American Legion in Illinois is among those attending the American Legion State Golf Tournament in Danville this weekend. In fact, the entire leadership team from the Illinois American Legion was on hand for Saturday’s opening ceremony at the Harrison Park Golf Course.
Roy Weber of Effingham is the Illinois American Legion Commander. He was asked how things are going with the Legion…
{‘’Like everywhere, the virus has kind of got us down a little bit. We’ve had closures because of the virus – we couldn’t open up our posts. It’s kind of tough to take care of Veterans in this way. That’s our sole purpose is to take care of our Veterans, our children and youth and support our communities with Americanism,’’ said Weber.
‘’It’s been a little tough but I think things are lifting up a little bit, and we’re going to get back in the swing – and I look forward to a fantastic next year, this coming year.’’}
Weber (second from left in the photo) says the American Legion is like all groups when it comes to trying to recruit new young members….
{‘’Coming from a farm community down around Effingham, we’re very successful in getting our younger people involved with the community traditionally. We have pretty good success down there,’’ said Weber. ‘’But I know it’s tough. It’s tough everywhere to get the younger members to get involved. Young families, things to do, technology changes, travel is prohibited, etcetera right now – but we’re doing our best trying to get it built back up,’’ said Weber during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.}
Weber is thrilled that 100-percent of the proceeds from the American Legion’s State Golf Tournament in Danville goes toward supporting Veterans….
{‘’That’s fantastic! We looked for a restriction for the amount of teams, and now we’re at a record number of teams this year. Looking forward to a great day,’’ added Weber. ‘’This is kind of a first for me – I’m not a golfer, but I’m going to do my darnest. And I did take some extra Ibuprofen because at 72 , I think I’m going to feel it tomorrow and the next day.’’}
In addition to using the Harrison Park Golf Course, players were also using the Turtle Run Golf Course in Danville.
