Danville Area Community College Trustees focused strictly on sports during a special study meeting held on Saturday. DACC President Stephen Nacco says the meeting ‘’was about looking at current sports, maybe future ideas for sports, (and) about just really how athletics fits our overall mission.’’
Nacco notes some trustees would like to see indoor and outdoor track return, along with volleyball….
{‘’I would say volleyball – it would have been a great idea if we didn’t have a pandemic,’’ said Nacco. ‘’Thank goodness, we were thinking about having a demonstration of volleyball – not as an NJCAA sport, but to see if we could generate a team – an interest – that might lead to it. But the pandemic would have totally disrupted that.’’}
Tim Bunton, a familiar face at Danville Area Community College, is now the college’s full-time Athletic Director….
{Tim Bunton has been a baseball coach and 25 year employee here. Now he’s exclusively devoted to athletic director. It’s something I saw when I got here back in 2016. I said ‘how can we have an athletic director who’s spending half the year coaching and off with his baseball team?’ And we really needed to ratchet-up that position as it supports the overall mission,’’ added Nacco during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.}
Nacco noted DACC has been losing a lot of good athletes from within its own district who decide to attend college elsewhere. So he says the college needs to do a better job at recruiting.
Trustee John Spezia noted keeping good coaches is now very competitive. So he says to keep good coaches, their salaries will need to be sufficient.
