Although the storm is hundreds of miles to the south, central Illinois residents are able to help those impacted by Hurricane Laura.
Drew Brown, Regional Communications Manager for the Central Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross, says Red Cross volunteers are helping throughout the region….
{‘’Red Cross is ready for a large response effort across Louisiana and Texas with nearly 600 trained disaster workers helping support communities threatened by Hurricane Laura. And we have also pre-positioned shelters and relief supplies along the gulf coast. And additional workers are on stand-by if needed,’’ said Brown.}
(She was commenting Wednesday evening during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.)
With power outages expected to linger for days, or weeks, Brown says American Red Cross shelters will be helping those affected. And she explained how you can help….
{‘’You can visit www.redcross.org – or call 800-RED-CROSS – or text the word ‘Laura’ to 90999 to make a $10 donation. And donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to, and help people recover from this disaster,’’ said Brown. ‘’And this includes providing food, shelter, relief supplies, emotional support, and other assistance,’’ she added.}
Millions of people fled from the gulf coast region in advance of Hurricane Laura’s 140 mile-an-hour winds and warnings the storm surge could reach 15 to 20 feet in some areas.
In addition to the American Red Cross, power companies from several states staged equipment to wait until it was safe to move into the region.
