Although most students in Danville District 118 are involved in remote learning, the district is making sure students do not go hungry. At a free food distribution for some of those students at North Ridge Middle School Tuesday evening, kitchen manager Marvalene Stovall was asked how the drive-up distribution was going.
“Things are going fine,” she said. “The cars are going so fast, we’re not slowing anybody down. It’s been going good. I’m surprised that we’re doing good. We haven’t counted the numbers yet, but I think we’ll go over what we passed out last week.”
Stovall is surprised the food distributions have lasted this long.
“When the corona first hit, I never thought we’d be here,” she explained. “It’s like, ‘Is this going to be our new normal for a while?’ because that’s what I was thinking. As far as this is concerned, the kids who aren’t at school still have to eat, so we’re still providing them with meals even though they aren’t in school.”

District 118 is passing out free food for remote-only students every Tuesday evening from 5-6 p.m. The district also hosts another food distribution at Danville High School every Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.
The Tuesday evening food distributions for District 118 students on remote learning take place at:
- Danville High School – 202 E. Fairchild St.
- North Ridge Middle School – 1619 N. Jackson St.
- South View Upper Elementary School – 133 E. 9th St.
- Mark Denman Elementary School – 930 Colfax St.
Around 200 families participated in the drive-through food distribution at North Ridge Tuesday night. They were given items ranging from milk to vegetables and other food.
