The threat associated with the COVID-19 virus has prompted some – primarily older – election judges in Danville and Vermilion County to decide they will not be manning polling places next month. Both Danville Election Commission Director Sandy Delhaye and Chief Deputy Vermilion County Clerk Lindsay Light say they are still accepting applications for election judges. But neither expects to have any problems filling the positions.
Delhaye notes training for election judges is being done online this year. She notes even the poll-watchers will have to be six feet apart. And Delhaye says anyone interested in being an election judge can contact her. ‘’We’re always looking for judges,’’ added Delhaye. She notes that with Election Day being a state holiday, perhaps some students or teachers would be interested. The pay is $150 for 12 hours of work.
Chief Deputy County Clerk Lindsay Light says she, too, would welcome high school students or county employees who want to help on Election Day. Since it is a state holiday, county offices – with the exception of those involved in the election – and schools are closed that day. Some of the training for election judges who man polling places outside Danville, but within Vermilion County, is being done in-person and some will involve Zoom video training.
If you have not yet registered to vote, Vermilion County Clerk Cathy Jenkin’s Office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday…and from 9:00 a.m. until noon on Saturdays leading up to the election. The County Clerk will also have extended hours – remaining open until 7:00 p.m. on October 26th through October 30th.
The Danville Election Commission Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Starting on October 10th the Danville Election Commission Office will be open on Saturdays leading up to Election Day from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
The Danville Election Commission Office is located in the basement of the Vermilion County Administration Building at 201 North Vermilion. The County Clerk’s Office is located on the first floor of that same building.
