As area high schools prepare for the winter sports season, more is being known about when a decision will be made.
Danville High School Athletic Director Mark Bacys says Governor J.B. Pritzker could decide later this month if medium-risk sports such as basketball and wrestling will be allowed to play. If Pritzker does not make a decision, then the IHSA’s board of directors would decide what will happen.
Bacys says it would be very difficult for wrestling to happen due to heavy contact, and as for basketball–face masks could be a requirement for everyone during games, including players.
“It’s sounding that the modification might be that the athletes play in masks all the time during games, which would be a whole other discussion to have at some point if we hear about the changes through the governor’s office or the IHSA,” he says.
For now, both high school and middle school teams in District 118 are participating in contact days. School board members approved up to 20 contact days for IHSA teams and 15 contact days for IESA teams.
The IHSA’s plan announced back in August called for football, volleyball and boys’ soccer to be played in early spring instead of its traditional fall season.
