The strong winds that lasted throughout the day on Saturday here in central Illinois brought about several field fires during the day.
Firefighters from several area departments responded to a field fire southwest of Catlin around 12:30 Saturday afternoon. Catlin firefighters were assisted by members of the Westville, Fairmount, Tilton, Kickapoo and Oakwood departments. The fire was contained in about two hours, with some corn destroyed and a portion of the fire spreading to railroad ties.
Another fire was reported in the northwest part of Vermilion County Saturday. Firefighters extinguished a field fire about two miles south of Rankin along Route 49. The fire was in a field that had already been harvested.
Outside of Vermilion County, a fire occurred near Taylorville Saturday, and another near Olympian Drive north of Champaign.
Winds will be much less of a factor throughout the week this week, although rain is forecast every day through Friday.
