A Mahomet man has been arrested after police say he hit and killed a bicyclist earlier this month and then fled the scene.
41-year-old Robert O’Malley is facing a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
The accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, October 11th. Three bicyclists were riding as a group about a mile west of Mahomet on Route 150 when police say O’Malley struck two of them with his white Ford Mustang.
One of the cyclists was killed—Dr. William Schuh, a longtime employee of Carle Foundation Hospital who was serving as the chief medical information officer at the time of the accident.
O’Malley was identified after several people claimed they knew who the vehicle involved belonged to. The News-Gazette reports O’Malley has a history of speeding tickets and is currently on probation from stealing from his previous employer.
