Vermilion County Treasurer Sue Stine has announced she will retire from her position, effective March 31st. Stine has worked for Vermilion County for 38 years and has served as Treasurer since 1994.
She says it is time to relax. ‘’Time’s are changing. We got a new tax cycle system last year, and they’re talking about getting a new accounting system. And, hey – it’s time for somebody else to learn all this stuff,’’ said Stine during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News.
Stine added a lot has changed in her office over the years. ‘’When we first started here we were sticking stickers in the tax books to show the payments. We were doing it by hand. We had twelve part-time people who did all of the posting of the payments back in the eighties.’’
Now the system is automated, and Stine says her office is run by two fewer employees than when she started. She added she has truly enjoyed working with the general public over the years. But she noted that not all people were happy when they came to her office to pay their tax bill. ‘’People have said, ‘well I’m going to go get an attorney and sue the office’. And I’ve said ‘go right ahead.’ You know we have a big stick. The State statutes are very clear on how taxes are collected – so it’s been pretty good.’’
County Board Chairman Mike Marron says Stine ‘’has done a really good job.’’ And he noted when she leaves ‘’there’s a lot of institutional knowledge that’s leaving.’’ Marron adds the Republican Central Committee will begin the process of searching for a replacement. Precinct committeemen will vote later – using a weighted process – to recommend a person to the County Board Chairman. And the County Board will then be asked to concur in that appointment. The person selected will fill the Treasurer’s position until the 2018 election.
