Oakwood Police are alerting area residents about a scam. Police say it targets people who answer ‘’yes’’ when they are asked questions during a phone call from unknown individuals. Oakwood Police say although you might think nothing of it, the scammers are able to use that response to add huge charges to your phone bill.
Police say the caller usually acts as though there is a bad connection on the phone call and asks whether you can hear them. They then record your response when you answer ‘’yes’’. Oakwood Police issued an alert about the incidents saying the scammers also use other methods. Sometimes the scammer asks the person answering the phone whether they are a homeowner. Other times they pretend to be someone from the power or phone company calling.
Police say the longer the scammer can keep you on the phone line, the more likely you are to give them information they can use to scam you. And Police say the best thing to do is simply hang up on the caller.
And Oakwood Police caution you should never give callers your personal information unless you are 100-percent positive about who is on the phone.
