The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says a Champaign area man has been selected to take over concession activities at Kickapoo Landing. Tom Monahan will be taking over the operations under a new contract agreement with IDNR.
The Department says it is excited to have someone going back into the facility since a lot of people use it. Monahan runs a youth camping company that is based in Champaign.
Kickapoo Landing is located along Clear Lake in the heart of Kickapoo State Park (northwest of Danville). It has been providing canoes, kayaks and tubing for the nearby Middlefork River, which is a National Scenic River. It has also provided canoes, kayaks and paddle boats for Clear Lake. Last year, however, IDNR notified the previous operators of Kickapoo Landing that their contract was being terminated.
Co-operator Tod Satterthwaite said at the time that he was not sure why their lease agreement was being terminated. He added, however, that there had been an on-going discussion for years about what the proper water height should be on the Middlefork River before a decision is made to close it to water enthusiasts.
Under the new agreement IDNR says Kickapoo Landing will open on weekends beginning April 1st. It will operate under a new name – Kickapoo Adventures.
