Some students from Danville’s Kenneth D. Bailey Academy went on the road (Thursday) to help celebrate National Read Across America Day. They fanned out visiting Danville’s elementary schools to read to kindergarten students.
The National Education Association’s Read Across America celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joy of reading.
Carolyn Dupree, a kindergarten teacher at Danville’s Garfield Elementary School, says parents do not have to just sit at home and read to their children.
‘’You can ride down the street and they can read stop signs. They can read the signs on the street. They don’t have to just sit at a table. They can go outside to read those street signs. They can open up a magazine and point to pictures and tell their parents what that is. It’s not just sitting and reading a book, there’s all types of things you can do for reading,’’ says Dupree. The Kenneth D. Bailey students also created a lesson plan, and carried out their plan by playing games with the young students.
