Vermilion County is planning to renew its effort to secure the Federal Building in downtown Danville. County Board Chairman Mike Marron says the county is still interested in relocating offices there that are currently located at the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex.
‘’We’ve done a lot of investigation on options of where we might be able to move. And right now the Federal Courthouse still looks like the most viable and reasonable option. So we’re going through the process of putting together a new application to the National Park Service, and we’re hoping to resubmit by the end of the month and get that process moving,’’ says Marron.
And for those who wonder why the county simply does not keep its offices at the Courthouse Annex, Marron explained the need to move.
‘’The problem with the Annex is that we’re attached to Bresee Tower, which is a vacant building, and it’s been vacant for some time now. If somebody doesn’t take possession of that building and renovate it, at some point the Annex is going to become uninhabitable. And at this point in time I just don’t see any viable options for anybody moving into the Tower anytime soon. So I just think it makes sense to look for a new home at this point,’’ added Marron.
The Federal Building was previously used for U.S. District Court proceedings, and for many years the building served as Danville’s post office. The offices that are located at the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex include the County Clerk, Treasurer, Auditor, Board of Review, County Board Office, and Danville Election Commission.
