The Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court is commending the Vermilion County Board for its recent action renaming the Vermilion County Courthouse. The board named it the Rita B. Garman Vermilion County Courthouse in honor of Supreme Court Justice Rita Garman, who is from Danville.
‘’Courthouses have occupied a unique and important role in American society,’’ says Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Lloyd Karmeier. ‘’They remind us of the enduring power of the law, its stability in an ever-changing world, and most importantly, its promise of equal justice for all without regard to position or privilege. Justice Garman’ career as a lawyer and a judge has been devoted to ensuring that the law delivers on that promise. She has embodied the highest principles of American justice, and her name on the Vermilion County Courthouse should be an inspiration to all who enter its doors,’’ added Chief Justice Karmeier.
Justice Garman served as Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court from 2013 to 2016. She still serves on the Supreme Court.
