State health officials announced on Thursday that Illinois has surpassed 1 million COVID-19 cases, a grim milestone since the start of the pandemic in March.
Illinois joins California, New York, Texas and Florida in reaching the one million case mark. The U.S. has recorded more than 21 million COVID-19 cases and more than 365,000 deaths.
Here in Vermilion County, the local health department announced 79 new cases on Thursday evening. The new cases, broken down by age, consist of:
- Four people in their 80’s
- Eight people in their 70’s
- Six people in their 60’s
- Eight people in their 50’s
- 19 people in their 40’s
- Nine people in their 30’s
- Five people in their 20’s
- Eight teenagers
- Eight grade-school-aged children
- Two toddlers
- Two infants
Currently, Vermilion County has 661 active cases and 31 residents hospitalized. There have been a total of 6,393 cases overall.
Health Department Administrator Doug Toole says the department vaccinated 120 more people for COVID on Thursday, making the total number now at 320 healthcare workers. He says two more vaccine clinics have been scheduled for next week.
