A ribbon-cutting event Thursday marked the official opening of the new Cannon Place Apartments in Danville. The 65-unit supportive housing building is located on the Veterans Affairs campus in Danville. It is named in honor of Congressman Joseph Cannon of Danville, an influential congressman who served as Speaker of the House for eight years. Cannon served 46 years in congress from 1873 to 1923.
The Cannon Place Apartments were built to support Veterans who are homeless, at risk of being homeless, disabled Veterans and their families. Mercy Housing Lakefront – the company which built the units – says it is optimistic that another building mirroring Cannon Place will be coming soon to Danville.
‘’The vision of the company is to alleviate the impacts of poverty, and that has a lot of complications to it, depending on the population and the individuals that are impacted by poverty,’’ says Mercy Housing President Mark Angelini. ‘’But obviously a big segment of that are individuals who have experienced long-term chronic homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. And clearly there is a special need within the population of Veterans.’’
