A longtime community event in Danville will not be held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The board of directors of Peer Court of Vermilion County say their annual auction has been canceled. It had been held in February each year for more than 20 years.
Peer Court officials say they did consider several other options for a fundraiser next month, but ultimately decided that they could not ask the community for more support after a difficult financial year.
Peer Court will continue to provide services to the youth of Danville and Vermilion County, they say. The organization is making accommodations to make sure youth have the option to keep their records clear and learn to take responsibility for their choices.
The Peer Court organization takes in first-time juvenile offenders in the area and develops community service plans with them, and criminal charges are dropped once the service plan is complete. Offenders are given the opportunity to learn job skills, get involved with local organizations, and meet many supportive community members.
