Some students from Danville’s Meade Park Elementary School have something they can watch grow along with them over the years. First graders representing four different classes helped plant an Autumn Blaze maple tree Friday at Meade Park. The students, along with the Danville Garden Club, were celebrating Arbor Day.
The event was not only fun but also educational as Danville Parks and Public Property Superintendent Steve Lane gave the students a lesson on the importance of trees.
Lane told the students the Arbor Day originated back in 1854 when a pioneer who moved from Detroit to the Nebraska Territory missed trees and decided to start planting some. He also discussed the importance of trees, including the oxygen and shade that they provide.
The Danville Garden Club had purchased the Leaf A Legacy tree from the City of Danville Parks Division. [In the bottom photo Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer addresses the students.
