Nearly 2500 students from schools across the Danville Area Community College District were treated to a performance by the Danville Symphony Orchestra yesterday (May 2, 2017). Busses transported the students to Danville High School for two separate performances.
Maestro Jeremy Swerling says he enjoys showing the students the different sounds which are made by various instruments. “That’s the fun of it and they really get a kick out of hearing the different instruments. Their teachers help them prepare and they behave really well when they come to concerts, so, it’s a lot of fun to go around the orchestra and play the samples from the different pieces and kind of quiz them: Who is playing this? And who is plaything that? And they like to yell out the answers.”
Swerling says Danville is very fortunate to have a symphony orchestra: “For a town of 30,000 people or so – there’s not many in the country…maybe 2 or 3 like us where we don’t have a four-year university to call on, you know, all the faculty members and music programs and stuff right here in the community. We have the college, but, for a town like Danville to have an orchestra – a professional orchestra like this where everybody gets paid – it’s unique.”
The Danville Symphony Orchestra has a show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Dick Van Dyke Auditorium at Danville High School. More information about the show can be found at the Symphony’s website at www.danvillesymphony.org.
